Scripting Problem, Search Broken

Josh

I am having a bit of a problem with one of my computers.
It is running Windows XP with SP1. What happens is this:
When I open up Search (Start -> Search -> For Files or
Folders...) the left side of the screen is just solid
gray. I get the same result when I click on search in
internet explorer. Many web pages do not open correctly. I
even had to post this message from another computer
because the newsgroups would not load correctly. I have
tried re-installing the service pack, running
sfc /scannow, and reinstalling the search assistant
(c:\windows\inf\srchasst.inf). I think my problem stems
from a failed Norton Un-installation, but I've tried
everything that I can find off of their web site
(including manual file-by-file uninstallation and
rnav2003). I am really hoping that I can fix this problem
without having to reinstall windows again! Any help is
appreciated.
Thanks
Josh

I got it fixed. I didn't find anything specific at that
web site, but was able to fix it another way. I found a
list of IE components here:
url=/workshop/author/behaviors/reference/methods/detectable
..asp]
I had a full installation of IE6SP1 available, so in
regedit [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components], I changed value of IsInstalled to 0 for all
of these components. I then ran the setup for IE6 and let
it re-install. That has cleared up all of my script
problems in IE & Windows and so far I haven't noticed any
negative problems. We'll have to see :) Still wish there
was an even easier way, though ;-)

Thanks to Rich for taking the time to help me out.
