Script error on Windows 2000 help chm links

David Lawrie

Hi, I'm using IE6 SP1 on W2k SP3.

Trying to use W2k help for the 1st time for a while, I get
An error has occurred in the script on this page
Error:Object doesn't support this property or method.

Internet browsing seems fine.

Recently I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2k (no major
problem- just tidying up).

Links to web pages in help are ok.

The MS KB mentions Office 97 and htt file corruption.

Any thoughts welcome- have tried reverting to IE5.5 and
reinstalling IE6. No change.

Thanks, DL.

David,

Here are some things to try:

1) Upgrade the components used to view HTML Help files by applying
Microsoft Critical Update 811630.
....

I recently fixed my Help problems.
My symptoms weren't as severe as David's,
just that Help links wouldn't work.

The odd thing I found is that it appears that 818529 regressed
811630's versions of hhctrl.ocx. (I removed 818529 reapplied
811630 and reapplied 818529 to confirm this.)

Reapplying 811630 restored the correct version of hhctrl.ocx
but I still needed to re-register it before the error symptoms stopped.

818529 does make reference to 811630 but doesn't make
it clear that a regression can occur. I would also like to know
why reinstalling 811630 wouldn't do its own re-registration.
One of those articles should be amended to inform us that
manual re-registration is required if that is the case.
