Screwed up CD icons-Need help really bad

Ok,

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 with a PIONEER DVR-110D DVD-RW drive.
One day, I put in a disc and went to My Computer, right-clicked on the
cd drive icon, and clicked open to see the contents of the cd. All of
the normal icons were covered by Microsoft Outlook icons. I have
uploaded an image here:

http://pcwiz.50webs.com/icon.htm

All the normal file icons were covered with outlook express icons. I
checked my hard drives. Their icons are normal. I tried copying a file
with the icon problem from the cd to the HD. Once it had been copied
to the HD, the copy on the HD had a normal icon. The icon problem only
happens with the files on a cd. I tried different cd's. No luck. I
restarted the computer and tried. The icons were back to normal. Then,
i reopened the cd contents and the problem was back.

PLEEZ HELP!!

P.S. The problem wasn't there before

What is going on? I Repaired Icons using the Tweak UI Power Tool and
everything seems normal. However, does anyone know what may have
caused this?

Not sure, but the first thing I would check is here:

"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons"

Can you export that key & post the export here?

By the way, the "Default" value is the only value in the Shell icons
folder.

Also, when i open the cd contents, the normal icons are there for a
split second and then the outlook express icons cover it, Another
thing is that before I had this problem, i installed 2 programs. CD
Check and Bad CD Repair Pro to recover some files from a CD. These
have been uninstalled though.Do you think that Outlook Express has
something to do with it since its outlook express icons that are
covering the file icons? The icons seem to go corrupt when I log out
and log back in. Could there be some startup program thats screwing
things up?

Hello happymac

Sorry you haven't had a solution yet. . . it is a very odd problem.

Have you tried logging on as a different user? Do you still get the same
problem then with the CD icons? If not, you could try deleting the icon
cache in the affected account and see if that helps.

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data
and delete the file iconcache.db. It's a Hidden file, so if you don't
have XP set to show these you may have to enable that first in Folder
Options | View. Then reboot and/or logon and logout *twice* (I find on
my machine it takes two reboots or logons before the file is recreated).
Any joy?

Let us know how you get on. Good luck!

That seemed to fix it. However, to problem comes back once a program
is installed (that i think) that adds registry entries to the windows
registry. I emailed Microsoft and to sum it up, they just said, fix it
yourself and if you can't, pay 60 bucks to get help from a "Microsoft
professional". If you know of another fix or have any other
suggestions, please post back. Thanks

Well, when the problem appeared, it appeared out of nowhere. However,
after deleting the iconcache.db file, I was wrong that it comes back
after installing a program. The problem just reappears randomly. For
now, I hae no idea what is causing this behaviour. Any suggestions?

AMAZING UPDATE

Guess what

You know how you can change how you want to view the icons on the View
menu? Well, I went onto the CD contents and if I choose the "Icons",
"Details" or "List" view modes, the Outlook Express icons appear. But,
guess what? If I choose the "Thumbnails" or "Tiles" view modes, THE
IE7 ICONS APPEAR ON TOP!!!

So in all the forums, uninstalling IE7 fixed the problem with the
icons. I'm thinking that if I do the same, the problem should be
fixed.

Hope to receive feedback soon
Thanks

I got it fixed. All I had to do was uninstall Internet Explorer 7. I
hope Microsoft fixes the bug (although IE7 is the most horrible
browser ever. I switched to Firefox 2 long time ago. IE7 came through
the Automatic Updates)

Thanks for all the help
