Hi all ~

The screensaver on my month-old Win XP Media Center Edition machine suddenly
stopped working.

I had it set to kick in after 5 minutes of inactivity; alternate settings
don't make a difference.

In the interim, I'm having to turn off my monitor when I'm away from my
desk, but I don't really want to do that.

Oh, and yes, I have scanned exhaustively for spyware, viruses & worms, and
came up clean.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!
best,
Denise

Have you restarted your computer?

Mine does this once in a while, It baffles me as to what causes it and
I haven't put my finger on it yet, but a simple restart will get the
screen saver working again. It doesn't bother me enough to figure it
out tho.

Hi Denise
Try selecting "blank" as the screensaver and see if that works.

Yes, I've restarted several times, but that didn't remedy the problem.
Thanks for the suggestion, though.

"Blank" does work, thanks. I'll stick with that until I find another
solution (if there is one).

I found this, which may relate to my problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;911895

It says that Microsoft Wireless mouses don't always work with XP SP2
systems. They say this applies to Dell machines and mine is an HP, but I
suspect the note,

"This issue also occurs in Windows Vista premium and in Windows Vista
Ultimate because of the media center functionality that is built in. There
currently is no solution for this issue in Windows Vista."

may also apply to Windows XP Media Center Editions.

And, I did get a new Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse for Christmas.

Oddly enough, my old mouse, a Microsoft Intellipoint Optical Mouse worked
fine.

Very bizarre that Microsoft would make mouses (and very expensive ones,
too!) that don't work with the newest versions of their software.

Is a screensaver actually needed with an LCD screen? (This one is my first.)
I guess I'll investigate further.

Thanks again for your help!

Denise

Hi Denise
My computer and wireless mouse are both HP and I haven't had your problem.
Having read similar posts on the subject of whether or not a screensaver is
actually necessary with an LCD screen,
the general opinion is that it is not required but I have mine set on
"blank" anyway.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Running XP Media Center Edition, I didn't have any problem with my previous
Microsoft optical wireless mouse, but the new Microsoft wireless laser mouse
is causing a problem ~

The optical wireless mouse also worked fine with XP Home edition. It seems
to just be the Media Center Edition & laser mouse combination.

(This makes some sense since Microsoft admits the Media Center functions in
Vista cause this problem as well)

I disabled the screensaver & just set my LCD monitor to turn off after a few
minutes of inactivity instead.

best,
Denise
