Screensaver settings in Display

Guest

Hello,

I have a screensaver problem that started recently. I have set the
screensaver to come on If I'm idle for 10 minutes. The screensaver I use is
(BLANK). For some reason It no longer starts at all. I have changed the time
settigs more than once and applied them, but it still won't start. I read a
similiar problem in another thread that said to download a SCR. Fix File with
a link to it. I tried it and applied it but that didn't work either. I have
never infected my system with any downloaded screensaver programs. The most I
do with display is change the wallpaper fairly often. Any help is appreciated.

Screen Saver May Not Start in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326719

The screen saver does not work when you use a Wireless Optical Desktop mouse on
a Windows XP SP2-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;911895

Posting from another user by the name of David:
"I figured out what the problem is. It's the Microsoft Wireless Mouse. If I
switch the mouse to one with a tail the screensaver works."
then David posted again
"I got a fix. I changed to connection to the computer using the USB to PS2
adapter that came with the mouse. Now I get the screensaver. I would be
interested to find out why this works."

Another checkpoint - make sure that a program is not causing the computer to
remain active. You may have a program running in the background that springs
into life when the computer is idle.

Kaylene,
It appears I put the cart in front of the horse on this issue. I tried both
solutions. First I tried using the adapter that came with my Microsoft
wireless keyboard and mouse, but that didn't solve the issue. Next I followed
your link for the microsoft solution. I did not perform a clean boot yet
because first I opened the System Configuration Utility and clicked the
startup tab just to take a look at it first. In my Startup's it dosen't show
the DVDLauncher or the PCMSERVICE. It does show PDVDServ, which I believe is
my Cyberlink PowerDVD Program. I did uncheck that box and then rebooted but
no change. FYI, I'm running Windows XP Pro if that helps. I hope you get this
and can offer more assistance and direction for solving this. It just really
bugs me if you know what I mean.

Thanks,
Schmitty

As this problem happened only recently, what else has been changed on your
computer from the time it was working to the time it wasn't working?

Any scheduled tasks?
Any new software/hardware?

Have you installed any free thirdparty screensavers as some of these can
cause problems as many have not been tested properly.

Hi,

I have never downloaded a screen saver program of any type, I'm aware of
what you usually get with them, and neither of us want it. Really the only
thing I ever do is change my desktop wallpaper fairly often, as I tend to get
bored with the existing one. The only thing I have done recently as far as
software goes is, I recently went to the Microsoft wireless keyboard and
mouse. Just before that I tried a Logitech Wireless keyboard and mouse but I
didn't like the mouse performance so I returned it and got the Microsoft set
which is way better.

Thanks for your time!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately I don't have a magic cure.
I had this happen once, but I changed the mouse from a USB mouse to a PS2
which fixed the problem (discovered by accident I needed the USB port). My
screensaver would only come on if an application was open but not if it was
at the desktop. Weird.
The only thing I suggest as a workaround perhaps is to create a screensaver
shortcut on the desktop.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/tips/liu1.mspx

Another thing, just as a test, try one of the other screensavers in WinXP
other than the "blank" one.

I have recently developed the same problem. It started when I downloaded
IE7. I wiped clean and reformatted and it worked fine so I downloaded IE7
(because I like it) and it is gone again. I have been working with the
Microsoft IE7 team and they have no idea either.
I have tried removing the optical mouse and that did not work either. I
have seen several power manegement issues that have cropped up here recently.
I am wondering if it has something to do with a recent update?

Michael,

I've been experiencing the same thing. I upgraded to IE7 and now my
screensaver won't fire up. It is very interesting. Let me know if you
found a way of correcting this.

Thanks
