screensaver quits on me!

I have my screensaver set to rotate my pictures after 5 minutes of
inactivity.
It does that fine, but after a while it stops and reverts to the desktop all
by itself, where it stays.
Does anyone know why this could happen?

Depending on the software quality, this may or may not happen if one of
these graphic files is damaged. I wouldn't use unstable software like
that and BTW, today's monitors do not need a "screensaver" anyway.

Well, I guess the software in question is the operating system, in this case
XP MC.
Here I was, intentionally dumping Vista for being too new, and doing a clean
install of XP, and stuff like this happens.
I was wondering whether the newer type of monitors even need screensavers (I
have a flatscreen LCD)... but since the feature is there I want to have it
work properly.

If you're talking about a built-in XP screensaver, you should mention.

Only the first CRT monitors required a screensaver in order to prevent
any burn-in.

Again, there is something wrong with your picture files most likely.
Either damaged or corrupted, renamed to a wrong file extension or
whatever. Finding out that file is not that easy since any graphic
viewer may or may not correct that problem in contrast to that screen-
saver. It's best to move all files out and leaving just one file when
you can be pretty sure that it's okay. Next, add one file after the
other until that problem shows up. Good luck.

Interesting...
On the assumption that there may be an offending graphics file in the my
pictures folder this morning I selected the "Da Vinci" motive from the
standard selection list of XP - just to see whether it would fix the
problem. It didn't. Now I am trying the "Aquarium".
