My club site was designed with 800 X 600 in mind.
Do I need to change this by now, and if so, to what.

I rather like 817 x 485, but it would depend on what you want to achieve.
 
Only if you want to. You can design it for any size screen you want.
 
You can also make it fluid using tables with the width set to 100%.
