How do I make screen shots with xp. Also I have a key on my keyboard which
is labeled "Print Screen" - "Sys Rq". It doesn't do anything. What is it
supposed to do? It's a Dell Keyboard

why dont you hit that "Print Screen" and open up your paint and edit>> paste
and see what happens.

The Print Screen button will capture an image of the desktop to the
clipboard. You can then paste that into any application that will accept
images from the clipboard.

Print Screen - captures the complete desktop
ALT+Print Screen - captures the window that currently has focus

Prt-Scrn captures the whole screen to the Windows Clipboard. Alt + PrtScrn captures the currently active window to the Clipboard.

Print screen doesn't print the screen anymore - hasn't for a while.
What it does is save the screen picture to the clipboard. Then you can
open an app like MS paint or whatever you want and paste it in there.
Alt-PrintScrn captures the current window. Access the clipboard viewer
by going to Start | Run | clipbrd.exe

You can also add the clipboard viewer as an item in the control panel
using this edit from Kelly's site, line 130, "Add Clipboard to the
Control Panel" at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the top of the page for information on running the edit.

It does do something. You just can't see what it does.

Back in the days of DOS, the PrintScrn key used to print the
screen. But in all versions of Windows, this works differently,
and the name of the key is now an anachronism.

To use the key, press it to capture an image of the entire
screen, or press alt-PrintScrn to capture an image of the active
window. Either one captures the image to the Windows clipboard.
Once it's in the clipboard you can paste (Ctrl-V) it into any
application that supports graphics (Windows Paint, other graphics
programs, even your favorite word processor). You can edit or add
to the image as you wish, then print it.

This ability to manipulate the image in a program before printing
it is an improvement over the original DOS method of just
printing it. But if you'd like that old facility back, there are
several third-party freeware/shareware programs that can do this,
such as PrintKey2000
(http://www.sharewarejunkies.com/00zwd2/printkey2000.htm).

Open the program MS Paint, and then click Edit on the menu, then click
Paste on that menu.

Download a program called PrintKey. It eliminates the need of having to
paste the screen capture in another program before you can print it.

You responded to me, someone who answered the question, not to
the person who asked. Not only that, but you didn't read my
message you responded to, since I made exactly the same
suggestion below.

Pressing the <PrtScn> key copies the entire display to the
clipboard. Pressing <ALT>+<PrtScn> copies only the active Window to
the clipboard (iow, into RAM). To view the screen capture, open a
graphics program, such as MS Paint, and press <CTRL>+V. This will
paste the contents of the clipboard (your screenshot) into the open
file, and allow you to view it or save it as a file for later use.

Yeah, like the term "Print Screen" makes it obvious that he's supposed
to open Paint and then paste! Don't be so damn condescending, please.

The PrintScreen key does copy the full screen [Alt+PrintScreen copies
only the active portion] to the Clipboard. If you want to view it you
have to open "Paint" or another graphics enabled program [I use Notepad
a lot] to paste it for viewing. A significant flaw [at least to me] in
the Windows Clipboard is that nothing is stored except the most recent
capture; however, there are many free programs around that will store
them for you. Two that come to mind are "Yankee Clipper III" and "CLCL"
[which I presently use]. By the way, you can also put a shortcut to the
Window Clipboard [Clipbook] on your Desktop if you wish.
