Printscreen won't work.

Since upgrading to SP3 for XP there have been several reports of the
Printscreen function not working. Alt- PrintScrn won't work either. The user
can cut and paste text from docs but nothing for screen shots using any print
screen key combo.
Is this a known issue with a fix?

Thanks

No, it is not a known issue. What are you trying to paste into? After
pressing PrintScreen, did you check the clipboard (clipbrd.exe) to see if
something got picked up?

All Print Screen and ALT-Print Screen does is to copy the screen or the
window into the clipboard. Is this what you mean doesn't work anymore?
Or were you expecting something else to happen?

By the way, the free FastStone Capture is my favorite Print Screen third
party utility.

It may depend depend on the graphics application. In Photoshop
Elements, for example, paste doesn't work for clipboard images.
You have to do File > New > Image from clipboard. In MS apps,
such as Word, the usual CTRL+V will work to paste a window
captured by Print Screen.

Just doing a screen shot from the desktop or an internet page.
Open up paint and paste is grayed out Ctrl-V no go either. Tried the print
Scrn key, Alt-Print Scrn, Ctrl-Alt-Print Scrn.

Just ran clipbrd.exe and nothing is going there.

MWSnap freeware is a small yet powerful Windows program for snapping
(capturing) images from selected parts of the screen.

Current version is capable of capturing the whole desktop, a highlighted
window, an active menu, a control, or a fixed or free rectangular part of
the screen. MWSnap handles 5 most popular graphics formats and contains
several graphical tools: a zoom, a ruler, a color picker and a window spy.
It can be also used as a fast picture viewer or converter.

MWSnap does not require installation and does not need any special dlls,
drivers or system files which can mess up your system.

Did you click the blue tab halfway down the left clipboard
margin? Nothing will happen until you click that. Also,
try pasting into Wordpad.

Clipbook allows you to share clip data with other computers.
If you want to use clipbook, three services must be enabled -
Network DDE DSDM, Network DDE, and Clipbook.
These services are disabled by default after SP3 for security.
If not enabled and started, they must be started in the above
order. If you don't need the clipbook, you should ensure the
above three services are disabled. They are not needed for
normal home use.

Try this:

1. Open the 'Control Panel' and select 'DirectX'.

2. Select the 'DirectDraw' tab.

3. Check the box "Enable PrintScreen Key"

4. Apply, OK.

If you're missing the Control Panel's DirectX applet you
can get it below. It's in a self-extracting archive. Just
extract it from the downloaded zip file then run it.

directx_cpl.zip 130 KB

Well.
Booted in safe boot. Clip board viewer still won't populate when the print
scrn key is pressed.
Tried the services. Still no go.
added DirectX.cpl. Still nothing
Tried USB and PS@ style keyboards.
Uninstalled SP3. Nothing
Gave the user another PC that works fine.
AT this point I'm just going to reinstall XP but sure would like to know
whats wrong.
Thanks for all the ideas.

I have seen that a malfunctioning KB or drivers can cause this key or
keys to malfunction. You can check the manufacturers WWW site to see
if you have the correct drivers.

Right now, you are not even sure when you press Print Scrn that
anything even happens, are you?

Laptop/desktop/another KB/another machine... Maybe the key itself is
broken.

Download a free keyboard tester that is compatible with your KB and
see if the Print Scrn is even recognized when you press it. If not,
there will be nothing to paste.

Here is a general purpose free one that works fine with my vintage
Microsoft Internet Keyboard.
