Screen saver won't work

I recently bought a Dell Insprion 1500 with XP home edition, and for the
first couple of weeks the screen saver worked fine. For some reason it has
stopped working. I do not use a wireless mouse or keyboard. I have tried
several different types of screen savers (marque, 3-D pipes, etc) and none
work. It DOES work when I do a preview though. Any thoughts?

Thank you.

Thank you for the reply. I went to the attached link and verified that my
system already has SP 2 installed. Also note that I tried to change the
power options to see if I could get the monitor to turn off after 1 minute of
idle time, but it will not turn off. Is it possible that something is
running in the background?

Yep. Go to Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and click OK
Click the Startup tab and see all that is checked/enabled.
You can uncheck all except your anti-virus program, and reboot.
Now you can recheck them one at a time to find the culprit.
