Screen saver will not run

XP Pro

I selected a standard MS Flying Flowers or some such, use it on W2K and
W98. Set it to go at 5 minutes, of course hit Apply. Preview works fine, as
it should.

In Power options, everything is set to Never turn off. The machine gets a
cold boot each day.

The screen saver will not kick in.

The monitor has been used with W98SE, no hidden settings in it.

What in XP prevents a standard screen saver from running on schedule, how
to fix it?

Have you checked to make sure there are no applications running any periodic tasks
in the background?
Did you set the activation time to 1 minute to test to see if the screensaver will
activate?

Thanks, Brian

I used a small utility that lists processes, nothing AFAIK unusual except
there are 7 running copies of svchost.exe. Still new to XP so I did not
note this before. I try to minimize apps running, so Task Scheduler is
off, uninstalled AV programs, offline operation only.

Set screensaver delay to 1 minute. Waited, no luck, then rebooted,
waited, no luck.

Any default process in particular to look for, as I could run another
process util that shows everything.

Advice?

BTW, I notice you are also on the XP ng, I have a project from our W98
days I will get back working on, will contact you.

I ran more comprehensive process apps. One showed Task Scheduler still
running (not in System Tray), so I stopped it again.

Rebooted, no luck. Shut down. 5 minutes later, booted up. An XP
screensaver appeared after 1 minute. In Display, my Flower Box selection
had been changed to MS XP screensaver. I reselected Flower Box, again 1
minute, Apply. No luck.

In processes, not sure of every one, most are my apps, never interfere
with SS in other OS. Other processes are XP, don't know if they effect
the above.

So the selected SS still does not run.

Since the XP one worked and the 3D Flowerbox won't, it may be that you don't have
the proper video to support 3D. Try the other 3D and non 3D screensavers to see if
that is the case.

I switched to "Flying Stars" or whatever, another standard MS SS, no
mention of 3D. That works fine.

The Flower Box has worked for me even on an old P166 in W98SE, where I
definitely did not have a 3D video card. I since used it on several old
W98SE machines that again I doubt had 3D video.

This XP machine has a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 video card, need to get
data on it, but would suppose it has 3D capability. In Display, Preview,
the Flower Box runs, Yet as selected SS, it will not work on this
machine.

Dunno, this is the first among about 5 assorted computers that Flower Box
refuses to run.

Thanks again

Just searched, yes the GeForce2 MX/MX 400 video card does have 3D
capability, so still a puzzle.

Check the settings in the cards properties to make sure 3D is enabled. Other than
that, what version of DX is installed?

Start > Run, type in: dxdiag and press Enter.
Run the video diagnostics.
