Screen Resolution

We have a high quality NEC monitor and since we got it
back from the shop--where they installed additional memory
and upgraded to XP--the screen resolution hasn't been as
clear as it was before. I've tried messing around with the
settings in control panel, but I don't see any appreciable
difference. I'm wondering, is this a short falling in the
new operating system or if the guys at the shop did
something to our video card.

If you mean "clearness" is sharpness and focus of the image, then I
would suspect this has nothing to do with XP. It's a function of the
graphics card and monitor.

Did they upgrade the video driver and/or card? Is the driver for the
video compatible with XP, or is it left over from the previous OS?

Since in you first sentence you say the NEC monitor was in the shop,
what did they do to it? Was it acting up before it went in? DId you get
the same one back?

What they may have done is implement Clear type font smoothing with a
CRT monitor. Clear type is good for LCD screens, for which it is
intended, but often makes things worse on CRTs. CHeck at Display -
Appearance - Effects, and for a CRT have the 'Use the following to
smooth edges . . .' either Standard, or unchecked altogether
