Screen resolution that is squished

My NEC Multisync 70 is capable of 1280 x 1024 and Windows XP allows me to
set that resolution; however the image is squished; it occupies about half
the area of the monitor. Except for being squished, everything works fine.

I have had this problem for a couple of years; I use 1024 x 768 and that
works. If however there is an easy solution for getting 1280 x 1024 then I
can sure use the higher resolution.

It is time for a new system but if this problem can be solved by a new
adapter then I will get a new adapter. I assume that I can get a good AGP
adapter new or used for a very reasonable price. I just don't want to do
that if it won't improve things.

I assume this question has been asked before but I don't know what keywords
to use to find previous answers.

You may have to set a lower refresh rate in order to use 1280 x 1024.
Set this in Display Properties - Advanced - Monitor.

My monitor (not NEC) requires a 60 hz refresh rate for 1280 x 1024

Good luck

Try lowering the refresh rate, this may allow you to get a full size
display.
Start at 60 Hz and increase the rate, stop at the highest rate that allows
for a full screen.

Thank you for mentioning that.

I have tried that; at least as best as I could see. I have looked at the
manual for the monitor as much as I can. The XP table of modes lists the
1280 x 1024 resolution with the refresh rate that is in the documentation
for 1280 x 1024. After setting 1280 x 1024, I checked (I forget how) to
ensure that the refresh rate was set as it should be.
