Hello everyone.

I've done a search before posting my problem and found some similar threads, though nothing exactly as mine problem. I have an Acer Travelmate 2350. My problem is that all of a suden during my work the screen goes blank and machine instantly reboots. Sometimes, after this "reboot" a post screen with Acer logo freezes and even BIOS doesn't start (i do a hard turn off in this case). I am sure it is a hardware problem, since there are no error messages or "windows is shutting down" warnings. It simply reboots as if someone unplugged and then plugged you back.

But the most interesting thing is that I am still on warranty and sent this piece of c...p to Acer Repair center for 3 times already! Everytime I talk with an agent by phone he "pressuems" that this is a mainboard flaw. But in the Repair center they usually think differently. They change parts (hdd, ram modules) but it doesn't elliminate the problem. Moreover, my m/b has already been changed in the first month of use.

Now I am "fighting" with my retailer since I want to have my money back. But if it doesn't work, do I still have hope to fix this problem? And the most important, WHAT is going on with my laptop? Has enyone delt with something like that before? Is it a m/b problem?

I would appreciate any help.

Eugene.

I'm with Me__2001 on this one, it does sound like it may be a heat problem - does it take a while for the first reboot, and then subsequent ones happen more frequently?

Doesn't look like overheating.

It is not a heat problem for sure. I have a CelM running at 46-49 by C while idle (tested by Hardware Sensor Monitor). Fan usually goes at 60 (which is common for all laptops, as I understand). But high 40s is not the reason for a machine to turn off, right?

Yeah, sometimes it crashes/reboots after 10 minutes of use and in those cases the machine is usually as cold as 38-40 by C. (Once it even crashed while I was reinstalling Windows (I use XP Pro)). But sometimes the machine works for the whole day and it is just fine. Then, on the next day it could crash for 3 or 5 times. I tried to observe any "logic" in this behaviour, but it simply seems to crash when the machine has a bad mood. Though, I noticed that for the most part it does crash when there is an activity going on (copying files, browsing the web, listening to the music, doing power point etc). I think it never did crash while idle (doing office work or so), but a computer doesn't stay idle forever... And the most times the screen goes blank and machine reboots when I have a usb device plugged in or if I am connected to the LAN or wireless network (combination of both is fatal for sure). Isn't it weird? Yeah, that's why guys from the Repair center cannot figure out what the problem is.

Look forward to hearing your ideas.

PS. do you guys think this might be a motherboard flaw? If BIOS doesn't start (which is written in the main memory of m/b, right?) and the post screen freezes it is something more severe than RAM or hdd flaw? However, I am not a specialist. I am just wandering what's wrong (even Acer people wandering with me...).

No, not weird ...

If that was a PC, I would say you have a 'power' problem ... ask for a replacment, well you can try.

XP is not crashing so you are not seeing any 'error' messages but USB takes a little extra power ... ;)

who knows...

yeah, sounds like a 'power' problem indeed... but i still can't figure out how a power problem results in bios "freeze". this looks more like a mobo going bad. but as i understand it correctly, mobo hosts some "electricity-running-around" processes (excuse me for my ignorance in finding correct terms :o ), which potentialy can result in computer shuting down, right?

anyway, now my retailer "contacting" acer to find out about replacement/refund, though, as they say, it is very hard to do it because of holidays... doesn't sound too convincing but i don't really have any other choice.

but still, as i am asking people i am the only one who has this "weird" power/mobo (?) problem. don't have a clue what the real problem is...
