Well i think this has happened before but my screen dims a few seconds after
logging in, the mouse cursor stays normal brightness. What could be causing
this? I have the latest drivers for my ATI 1650 video card. Thanks in
advance!

It's is very probably an ICC profile, colour correcting your monitor. It is
not going to be making your monitor 20% darker, but the gamma is being
altered, and you are perceiving it to be that.

While this is not anything that anybody dealing with graphics or printing
would ever do, and if you are not concerned with everything (including web
graphics) looking as it should, you can disable the ICC profile in the
Colour Control Panel applet (not recommended by me).

Any chance you have the Power Settings set to use a less than full
brightness? I've seen this exact scenario on some Vista systems - it
does not set the brightness level to match the power profile until a
moment or two after displaying the desktop.

That could have been a possibility on a laptop, but he has an ATi X1650
graphics card, so he does not. And anyway, that sort of power saving mode
is normally only put in operation when the laptop is using battery, and the
battery is at a low level, in my experience. Therefore, it is easy to
realise why it is happening.

Have you ever calibrated what you see on your monitor using software,
not the monitor's controls? Like adjusting the white/black balance,
and the color balances?

What you see happened to me a loooooong time ago when I played with my
settings for Photoshop, or some other program (don't recall) to get a
better color look.

When XP started it took a few seconds to switch to the calibrated
profile... resulting in a change in brightness a few seconds after it
loaded my desktop.

If you are talking about using Adobe Gamma, this is the same thing as what I
said.

Missed it. And Adobe Gamma WAS what I was talking about.

Don't be too sure... my laptop is too bright - I keep it toned down
all the time :)

Is there a power management profile being loaded?
