screen cracked and colours blobbed together?

my son had laptop for xmas and he opened it one day to find the scree
looked cracked behind and the colours have all run together into
blob. wot is this? and can it be fixed

Have you tried starting the laptop into safe mode? Press F8 at start up.
Also does it look broken as soon as the screen has any text on it before
windows has loaded?
If the answer is yes then a new screen I am afraid as it sounds like someone
might have sat on it!
