screeching audio

trying to sort things out, downloaded free convert progs to get mpeg to avi
/ wav /dvd all converting video but sound is speeded up to screech
level...whats happening?

Happens sometimes with "free" programs.
Try a different program, some free ones work just fine some don't, to see if
you get the same result.
Personally I spent a couple bucks and got AVS Media Converter. (Link on my
website)

well they're only "free" cause they do half the file till you pay and I'm
not paying for a noise like that!

I agree, hence the reason I mentioned AVS Converter.
