Scratch on Monitor - Safety?

Hi,

I hope this is in the right group, i need help, here is the deal, I
was rearranging my workspace the other day and I accidentally scratch
the faceplate of my 2 1/2 year old Samsung SyncMaster 700NF monitor. I
have been doing some reading and I am a bit nervous about the
integrity of the vacuum in the CRT. The scratch is just left of and
below center and about 2 inches long. It is only deep enough that it
will stop your fingernail if one were to brush there finger over it. I
can even see the shadow on the tube behind the glass. I can live with
the scratch for now but cannot live with the possibility of an
implosion. When is a scratch dangerous to a CRT? Does it sound like I
am safe to keep using it? I am happy with Samsung monitors but I am
not ready to upgrade yet. Thank you in advance.

Sorry to hear about your mishap, but CRTs are very rarely unprotected. There's
almost always protective glass in front of the tube. You have probably just
scratched that.

There will be a very thick layer of leaded glass bonded to the face of your
CRT, both for radiation filtering and for physical protection in case of
failure of the envelope. I wouldn't worry about it -- most CRTs are pretty
much bullet-proof from the front and you would have to do some really severe
damage to weaken in noticeably.

It's annoying, but if you're worried about it blowing up in your face,
it's going to take considerably more than that. Sorry, but if you
want a trip to FutureShop, the safety excuse isn't going to cut it.
You'll need to try a bit harder (not that I'm suggesting you should
try)

The front glass on a CRT is pretty darn thick, and the "flat screen"
varieties like yours (and most modern CRT monitors) are even thicker.
I'm not even sure if you scratched the actual glass, since there's
usually a coating applied to the surface of most monitor screens and
that's usually what most people end up scratching. It's probably
going to be annoying (since you'll notice a surface scratch quite
readily, as I'm sure you know) but dangerous? Probably not.

I wouldn't worry until you start using words like gouge, divot,
crater, or chip :)

when i was a kid i used to take apart tv's for parts.
when disposing of the crt...
for safety reasons...i'd break the filler nipple and let the air in...
one time i decided to see how strong the glass was,
so i covered the tube with an old blanket and then hit it with a hammer as
hard as i could.
i must have hit it dozens of times before i finally got the thing to break!

i must have gotten the neck of the tube...
the face of the tube, i found impossible to break
