SCR file (Screen Saver) Prompts what to open with in XP?????

Our workstations are getting "migrated" here at work meaning basically
we no longer have admin rights and there's a lot of domain stuff being
juggled around. We're trying to get our workstations back to
tolerable running conditions but one of the things that's strange now
is trying to manually launch a screen saver.

We have the rights to setup a screen saver and we can both preview it
and when it times out it runs. For example I have the scrnsave.scr
set and it works fine. The issue is when I go directly to the
scrnsave.scr file and double-click on it, I get a popup window asking
what application I want to open it with rather then have the screen
saver launch.

Not sure the reason behind this but we were hoping someone had a work-
around or tell us why we can's manually launch the SCR file but when
the system launches it, it runs fine. We have tried all kinds of
things including defining a desktop icon, adding the /p or /c or other
options and no matter what we do, we get the popup box asking what app
we want to use for the file.

Any help as to what may be going on here????

Thanks in advance!

Try the SCR association fix listed here:

Tried it but we don't have admin rights on our workstations that this
is a registry fix so we can't do it.

Thanks!

Then you should contact your System Admin, actually you should have done
that first.

That's a long story as we're under the umbrella of a division in
Europe, our I.T. folks are.... well, I'd rather not get into that...
but getting help from them is about as fun as a root canal. In
simpler terms, if I ask to have this association repaired to manually
launch the screen savers, we'd probably end up with all the screen
savers locked out. It's not a good situation here.

Unfortunately if you don't have the authority, rights or permissions to
"fix" the operating system, there isn't much we can help you with.

Did some begging yesterday and the network administrator (the least
difficult to work with) came out and ran the fix with admin rights.
Everything is fine now and the SCR file runs the screen saver once
again. Now if I can just figure out why my monitor will turn off
after an hour when all the power management settings say to NEVER turn
it off.... hmmmmm.... I don't mind that one as the people who's
workstation monitors don't power off have the XP login box burning
into their flat screen displays! :O)

Thanks for the help!

The BIOS may have a "green" setting for powering off Video. Flat screen
is CRT, but if you meant Flat Panel, that's an LCD, and should not have
a "burn in" problem.
