Schema updates and replication

Hi,
I've learned that updating a W2K AD schema will result a full synch
replication. Can someone explain this cause I'm not 100% sure wat is meant
by this.
Does this mean that ALL dc's will replicate the total AD content?
I've also learned that there is an improvement to this mechanism in W2K3.
How is this?
A related question:
when upgrading a W2K AD to W2K3 you need to perform an ADPREP wich will
adapt the schema. This will generate a full synch replication?
Regards,
Robert

You are right, if the changes are made to the schema then full sync
replication will take place. The GC gets discarded and a new is built after a
schema change in W2K, however in case of Windows 2003 the GC is not built
again.

so only the GC's will suffer from this in W2K and in W2K3 no full sync repl
will occur??

This is incorrect as stated.

Updating a 2K AD Schema will not result in a full sync. If you have a schema
update that updates an attribute's PAS (partial attribute set) status (when you
add something to the global catalog), then there will be a full sync on Global
Catalogs in the forest as they rebuild.

This has been reworked in Windows 2003 so it is considerably better but if you
have 2K DCs you can still run into times where a full sync could be required.
