I am a XP Home user with SP2 installed. If i use shutdown -s -f command to

Yes.

This will display help for shutsown.exe.

Open a Command Prompt...
Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK |
Type:

shutdown /?

Hit your Enter key.

shutdown -s -f
-s Shutdown the computer
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-----

Use Task Manager to close running programs.
Open Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Esc

To end a program with Task Manager
On the Applications tab, click the program that you want to end, and then
click End Task.

Note
Any data entered or changes made in that program and not saved will be lost.

To end a process with Task Manager
On the Processes tab, click the process that you want to end, and then click
End Process.

Important
Be careful when ending a process. If you end an application, you will lose
unsaved data. If you end a system service, some part of the system might not
function properly.

Note
To end a process and all processes directly or indirectly created by it, on
the Process tab, right-click the process you want to end, and then click End
Process Tree.

If you end the process tree for an e-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook,
for example, you will also end related processes such as mapisp32.exe, the
MAPI spooler.

If i use shutdown -s -f then it forces all the appliaction to close.
i have some peer to peer software installed and which continously downloads
the data. i want to switch off my pc at 8 am every morning. if the above
command is used then do it shutdown my pc normally and close all the
programs. if windows is not shutdown normally there is a chance of loosing my
temporary data of P2P software.

To be honest, I have no idea how the P2P thing works. So I have no idea
what would happen.

When you shut down your machine yourself, do you have to close your P2P
program? Or does it start where it left off when you reboot?

This P2P software have a name?
