Scheduled programs, defrag. etc. auto run at 3:00 a.m.?

Hello,
I see that I can schedule Windows to run certain operations like Defrag,
check for errors on my disc, run my anti-virus software, etc.

Question is---If I have these scheduled to start at 3:00 a.m. and the
next at 4:00 a.m. etc. (as long as they aren't scheduled to start at the same
time) but when I'm not using the computer, will these start if the machine is
in the Sleep mode? I assume nothing will happen if the computer is turned
off but does the computer have to be in use for these scheduled programs to
start and finish? Thanks for the enlightenment!

You'd need to ensure that the 'Wake the computer to run this task' checkbox
is checked on the 'Conditions' tab for the particular task (or do the
equivalent via script).

Hi Jon,
My God, I feel so stupid! I've gone along and assumed (and you know what
happens when we assume) that all this was "automatic"!!! So then, if I make
sure my computer turns on when these are scheduled, does that mean that the
computer should only be in the Sleep mode instead of completely turned off?
If the computer is turned off, will it awaken then? And if the computer is
just "sleeping" I've heard that you should always have the screen or lid
"open" or up and not closed so the computer doesn't overheat??? (I like to
keep my lid down as much as possible when not in use so dust and dirt stays
out of the keyboard.)

Man, can't believe how dumb I was on all of this. I guess because Vista
made it so simple for me to schedule all these tasks by simply stating -----
"Do you want to schedule this task for 3:00 a.m.?" etc., without informing me
that I had to make sure the machine was going to be "woke up" for the job,
that I just assumed all of that was automatic. And I'll tell you, I have had
a computer for quite a long time but was just ignorant on this process.

Hi Jerry

To be honest I've not really tested this out myself yet, but I'm guessing
that it works in much the same way that Windows XP did - ie that with the
'wake' option checked, it would wake from standby OR hibernation mode
(which is effectively off), but NOT if the computer is fully turned off (ie
via 'Start > Shutdown ... ) [although this may also possible via additional
wake settings in the bios, if required, depending on the computer model
etc].

What I'd recommend is to try a few 'test scheduled tasks' eg scheduling
notepad to run in 5 minutes time, and see how it performs in different
scenarios eg waking from standby / hibernation/ lid down or up etc.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jon,

Thank you for taking the time to inform me. I will experiment with the
process, the next time I am able to get some "play time". Have a great day.
