Scheduled Disk Defragmenting Problem

M

Mick

I'm using XP with service pack 3 and all the updates.

I set up a scheduled disk defragment according to the instructions in this
article:
http://blogs.msdn.com/crathjen/archive/2006/04/14/576448.aspx
The scheduled task indicates that it runs at the correct time but the disk
is not being defragmented. The system logs do not show any information
relating to the task so I don't know what causes the disk not to be
defragemented. I've tried adding
defrag.exe -f c: > c:\log.txt to the command but this did not produce a log
file. Can anyone help?

Does your user account have a password? Scheduling tasks require that
they're run under an account that has a non-blank password.

Does the task run if you go to the Scheduled Tasks folder, right click on
your defragment job and select Run from the menu?

Have you scheduled the task to run at a time when the computer is on
Standby? If that's the case you'll need to click on the Settings tab of the
task's properties sheet and make sure that "Wake the computer to run this
task" is checked. Keep in mind that the task will not run if your computer
is off or hibernating.

Have you checked the Scheduled Tasks log? It can be accessed through the
Scheduled Tasks folder by clicking on the Advanced menu on the toolbar and
selecting View Log. The log file is named SchedLgU.Txt and should be located
in your C:\Windows folder. You may find some indication as to why the task
isn't running in the log file.

Here are a couple of Microsoft articles on the subject.
