scannow sfc

I ran scannow sfc and it asked me for my XP CD - so some of the files were
corrupted and had to be replaced from the CD. But afterwards my modem would
not connect and my ISP icon disappeared from the desktop. I restored it to an
earlier point and then everything worked. Q: Did the restore get rid of the
new files I got from the CD and go back to the old corrupted files? Or is the
restore facility clever enough not to do this? By the way - everything seems
to be working fine.

I've heard System Restore called a number of things but "clever" has never
been one of them ;-)

sfc replaces windwows system files, they'll stick.
restore is dealing with restoring configurations and not actual files.

No, this is incorrect.

System Restore monitors a core set of system and application files,
archiving the states of these files before system changes are made.
System Restore also saves a snapshot of the registry (note: some
current registry values will persist) and some dynamic system files.
When System Restore detects that the user is not actively using the
computer, it compresses the registry and any file copies made.

Hi Miro,

Running System Restore after SFC has made changes to system files,
System Restore would replace any monitored files changed after the
restore point was created, undoing the changes made by SFC.

What I think happened in this case is, SFC replace newer files with
files from the CD.
This would be especially true if the system had Services Packs
installed and the CD SFC used was the original release of WinXP. Also
if the ServicePackFiles\i386 file were removed from the system to save
disk space, SFC would revert to the CD.
If everything is running as it should I would not be concerned with
what SFC found to be corrupt.
