Scanners produce graphic images - in your case TIF format. Word does not
edit graphic images.
If you have a recent version of Word then you should also have a rudimentary
OCR facility in Microsoft Office Tools that will convert a TIF image to an
editable document that bears some relationship to what you have scanned, but
for best results you need proprietary OCR software such as the excellent
FineReader.
