What is the best software to buy to make boot disks so you scan for virus in
dos, I am using avg at the moment but it will only scan fat partitions,
which software scans ntfs partitions, thanks.

I asked a similar question here about two weeks ago to get the feel for what
ppl thought.

I found that my own experience was the best source of info - the ppl in this
group don't care for DOS, or "3rd party" scanning in this manner.

My suggestion is to use whever AV product you find works well in DOS:
- Will locate virii (AVG and NAV have both missed virii in DOS mode in my
experience)
- Is able to remove the infection in DOS mode (use funlove as an example - NAV
never seems to kill it completely)
- If fairly fast (NAV can take *hours* in DOS mode - I've experience of waiting
from 40 mins to 7 hours)

Use this in conjunction with an NTFS4DOS or other sort of boot disk.

Of course you're going to have to understand the ins and outs of registry
editing as there'l be a variety of services and such to remove (after the scan
itself, preferrably in safe mode), you can also think about writing a small DOS
app to edit the win.ini and system.ini files to remove / comment out the
various run, load and shell entries that need clearing, and possibly empty any
startup folders in various user profiles. With a basic understanding of BASIC,
Pascal or any other (simple to learn) language this can be accomplished.

In conjunction with the above you might want to keep an archive of the various
removal tools that the vendors release from time to time - these can be handy
in DOS.

I myself am currently experimenting with an old Zip100 parallel drive with
ZipSlack and a variety of linux AV products.

good luck!
