When the button on the scanner is pressed, a dialog box appears in XP where
user can select a program to launch for this action.

How do I edit this list 'cos I can see the entry for the old scanner which
had been removed. There are duplicate entries for the same item too, like 2
entries for Photoshop.

I want to edit this list to remove those that I do not want.

Thanks.

You can search the registry using Regedit
using the name/make of your old scanner
and remove any old registry entries.

This is easy if the two scanners are different
brands (Example HP vs Epson), you may need
to narrow the search by using the model number.

Note: Create a 'System Restore' point before
you start.

The items in the list that you are talking about are called "Autoplay
handlers." Normally, entries in this list are created and deleted by
applications that view and/or edit various media types.

You can *add* a handler using TweakUI (expand the My Computer and then
AutoPlay menus): http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm

TweakUI will not, however, permit editing or deleting of handlers that
were not created with TweakUI. There is no real reason to delete
autohandlers, but if you really want to do so, see
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/autoplayhandlers.htm
