Scanners and writers

I have installed windows xp into my compaq presario 5170.
Not only can't I use my hp cd writer plus 7200 series, I
can't use my umax astra 1220 scanner. Do I need to
uninstall xp professional and go back to windows 98? This
seems to be my only solution without buying a new burner
and scanner.

Why exactly can't you use these? Do they not show up, do they not
function? Have you tried installing the XP Scanner drivers? What is
wrong with the CD ROM drive?
