Scanner is not recoginized

I have upgraded from Winme to Winxp and now my HP scanner
will not work. It worked in ME. The scanner is seen in
Device Mgr. but any scan programs will not see it. In
hardware it shows up but is not available. I have
followed all instructions to add and remove but still no
luck. I have also tried a canon scanner it get the same
result.
Could this be a fault of XP? Do I need to reinstall XP?

Any help would be appreciated.

What model scanner? Did you download any available XP drivers for this model
from the HP website? Drivers for me are not the same as drivers for XP.
