scanner does not work

My copy of Windows 2000 does not now recognise that there
is a Canon scanner attached, despite having had a scanner
attached for at least a year. The scanner is not shown in
the add/troubleshoot hardware window.
Any suggestions?

Is it a "hidden device" in device manager? What transpired between "was
there" and "now it's not"? Is it really plugged in? IF it is a "USB"
scanner is USB working?
