Scandisk

am having trouble running scandisk for the last few
days, whereas previously it ran without problems.

On the Check Disk Options, I ticked both 'Automatically
Fix File System Errors' and 'Scan For And Attempt
Recovery Of Bad Sectors'

It then gives me the usual message:
"The disk check could not be performed because the disk
check facility needs exclusive access to some windows
files on the disk. These files can be accessed only by
restarting windows. Do you want to schedule this disk
check to occur the next time you restart the computer?"

To which I always click 'Yes'

But now when I restart I receive the following message on
startup:

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS
Cannot open volume for direct access
windows has finished checking the disk

Is anyone able to offer any ideas:

Try opening BIOS & see if you have SMART enabled, if so disable it! MIGHT be that SMART is trying to access disk at same time!

Are you on XP? If so, there's no Scandisk; only ChkDsk.

Not a good idea. Wouldn't you rather know what was bent and what
ChkDsk planned to do about it BEFORE letting it off the leash?
It then gives me the usual message:

An inevitable consequence of trying to do HD maintenance from within
an OS that constantly writes to the HD you are trying to maintain.
But now when I restart I receive the following message on
startup:

Checking file system on C:

That rules out Scandisk, then - you have to use ChkDsk
Cannot open volume for direct access
windows has finished checking the disk
Is anyone able to offer any ideas:

Yep. Looks like something is accessing the HD even before AutoChk
runs to test it. What's the context here, i.e. why do you suspect
there may be HD or file system issues? Maybe the problems you have
are caused by an active malware that runs early in the boot process?

See http://cquirke.mvps.org/whatmos.htm - this sounds like a situation
where you need a maintenance OS, which NT(FS) currently lacks.

No, perfection is not an entrance requirement.
We'll settle for integrity and humility
