It is called 'check disk' in XP. Click the Start button>all
programs>accessories. From the drop down accessories menu click Command
Prompt. In the command prompt window type 'chkdsk' (without the quotes).
This will give a standard scan of the drive. You can also use the parameter
chkdsk /f to attempt to repair asny bad sectors. If you use this parameter,
however, a message will appear telling you that the scan cannot go ahead and
that you will need to schedule a scan. Simply press Yes to schedule a scan
and then reboot your machine. On reboot chkdsk will scan your drive.
An alternative way to get to chkdsk is to go to My Computer. Right click on
your hard drive and select Properties. In the properties window click Tools
and then click the Scan Now button in the error checking section.
