Scandisk - how to do a thorough one with XP Home?

Scandisk doesn't seem to be there.
I've found Chkdsk - but that doesn't seem to have all the options to do
a surface scan and give a detailed report.

I must be missing something!
Please advise.

Greetings --

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the
WinNT/2K OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk,"
which performs much better, as it's not burdened with presenting a
pretty picture of moving blocks of color while it's working.

From the command prompt (Start > Run > Cmd), type "Chkdsk.exe /?"
for the correct syntax and available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.

I don't entirely agree that it *does* do a better job on a FAT 32 disk.
If the disk is FAT 32 it would be possible to use the DOS mode scandisk
from Win98 or Win ME, after booting the appropriate startup floppy
