So I just did completed a media scan of my formated blank 12 GB 2.5" Toshiba
HD
The ScanDisk summary alarmed me. http://barrompe.notlong.com

Bad sectors, I can handle, but ones that aren't fixable? Why were these
not fixable, and are they out there limiting the reliability of this drive?
Shouldn't the media scan be able to mark them bad and cross them off the
usable sectors in the allocation table?

In my experience once a disk reports bad sectors it's going to develop
more. I wouldn't put this disk back in service.

Basically you should be using a decent diagnostic, not scandisk.

Bads can be not fixable because the drive has run out of spares.

If the drive has had the drive type setup properly, the mere
fact that there are so many bads indicates the drive is dying.

Yes. But the report says that it couldnt CORRECT
those bads, not that it couldnt mark them as bad.

You basically need to use a proper diagnostic to see
if there is some fundamental problem with the drive of
its just the drive type detail thats producing that result.

seeing these problems.

If it was part of a Toshiba PC, and it's still on warranty) you can
get it replaced at any authorized repair service. They can be found on
the Toshiba web site. If you call one you will reach someone who can
tell you your options. They can tell if it's covered, based on your
serial #.

If it was an OEN part, lots of luck.

analysis tool rather than ScanDisk.

but there were so many that it ran out of spares.

Nope, those are 2 different things. The ones that have been spared are OK
(replaced and data copied to spare) and therefor not in the allocation table.
The ones that have not been replaced (unable to copy data or out of spares)
will be logged as bad clusters in the allocation tables.
When the drive runs out of spares, logging as bad is all that can be done but
it can be done indefenately until there are no more clusters left to mark bad.

It's likely to continue dying, and I should ditch the
drive since Toshiba said it's our of warranty.

IF it is dying (internal causes). If the cause is external (powersupply, heat)
then removing those and running an all zeroes test should restore it to health.
