New to XP (Home). Tried defrag which stalls. Under Win98 would ctrl-alt-del
and end all progs except systray and explorer before running error scan the
defrag (and this worked a treat). Not sure what to do under XP.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

There is no scandisk in XP. Instead open a command prompt: from run
type in cmd.exe and press enter. From the command prompt, enter this
command: chkdsk /f The system will respond that it can't lock
the drive and ask if you wish to run on the next boot. Respond yes.

After rebooting, and the chkdsk utility runs, once back in Windows
then try to run the defrag utility again. If you still have problems,
try running defrag from safe mode.
