I am runninng windows xp sp1 with all updates, no viruses, no spyware or adaware. When I click on norton system works to check disk at reboot I get this message; cannot open volume for direct access windows has finished checking disk. So I clicked on the one in windows it does not work either. Can someone please tell me what is going on. Many thanks in advance
Note: the 40gb hard drive is 80% free
512 megs of ra
System runs fine except for this.

Windows XP uses "Checkdisk" and not "Scandisk" used in previous versions of Windows.
Since Norton uses XP's Checkdisk utility, you should just use XP's method.
The Checkdisk function cannot begin until you restart your computer.

I have restarted my computer a number of times trying to get this to work and it will not. Neither norton or windows check disk will work. I know how to make it run it just says like I stated cannot open volume for direct access on disk windows has finished. I have run this several times in the past but today it will not work. Any suggestions. Thanks

I'm having the same problem. After reading many posts, it seems many others have same problem. Any solution?
