SBS 2003, ActiveSync, and Excel files questions

G

Gregg Hill

Hello!

I am not sure which newsgroup to use for this one.

I have SBS 2003 SP1 with Exchange SP2 and XP SP2 workstations. I just bought
a new phone with WM6 on it and ActiveSync works great for Exchange stuff,
but I have a problem with Excel files. I have a spreadsheet for my mileage
that is in Excel 2003 format. I used to use it with my ancient Palm m130 and
Dataviz Documents to Go, which I have removed from my computer.

Every time I sync the Excel file to my desktop using ActiveSync, I can then
edit it on my workstation normally, but when I edit it on the phone and try
to save it, it always says that it must be saved as a different name and
that some formatting may be lost. I can save it as a different name, then
edit it again on the phone, and it saves fine until I do another ActiveSync
of the file. I see no changes in its layout or data between the version on
the phone and what is on the computer.

Are the versions of Mobile Office apps on WM6 the miniatures of Office 2007?
That might explain it. There are no macros in the file.

The only reason I am still on Office 2003 is for syncing my Palm to Outlook.
It is too old to sync to Outlook 2007, and I was waiting to get a WM6 phone
before moving to Office 2007.

Thank you for helping!

Cris,

I just noticed that the Save As on the phone is Excel 97/2000 and not even a 2003 version. On my workstation, I saved it as "Microsoft Excel 97- Excel 2003 & 5.0/95 Workbook" before I synced to the phone.

I guess I answered part of my question...no, the Office apps are not mini-2007 versions.

I still don't know why it makes me rename it after every sync and edit.

somewhere in the synch the copy coming to your phone is marked read only would be my guess. Is it synching via the WM_Documents folder on the desktop?
If so, might check the properties on that folder.

Yes, it is syncing to that folder, which is under the My Documents folder, which is under the Users share on the server.

The full path is "E:\Users Shared Folders\gregg\My Documents\WM_gregg My Documents\Business"

The whole tree and files have Full Control and the file is not read only.

I Googled for hours looking for Excel save as and activesync problems before I posted here. The file on the PC is not read-only.

While Googling using your suggested keywords, I found out that there is an actual Smartphone newsgroup, so I am adding them to this cross-post.

Any Smartphone gurus out there?

I am off to bed, then Google in the morning!
