Saving URL with downloaded program

M

miskairal

Hi all

When I download a program, I usually save the web page about it in the
same folder. Is there anyway to quickly save a URL as a .txt file or
something in the same folder without having to go in and open a new text
file? A right click option woud be great.

I'm using Firefox 1.0.1 and have been saving the URL in the bookmarks
but I'd prefer to save it with the program.

Cheers

I use the free Winkey program to set a windows key & O, open a notepad
program, paste the URL in the, a description of the program, what version,
and the date and time.

"FileNote is a little shell extension that allows you to add textual
descriptions to your files. It adds one command to the shell context menu of
a file object. This command lets you easily edit or create a text file that
has the same name as the initial file, but with the extension TXT.
For example, if you have a file, MyImage.jpg, you right-click on that file
and choose the FileNote command from the context menu. A new text file
called MyImage.txt is created and Notepad is opened to edit that text file.
If a text file with that name already exists, it will be opened for
viewing/editing."

Ciao,

How does it differ from Notepad or Word pad? How is it superior?
I realize that these parts of Windows aren't freeware, but they are
programs that most people already have, thus what's the advantage
of this program over those? TIA.

FileNote is not a text editor: it creates a text file (which opens in
Notepad by default) with the name of the file you right-clicked on as its
filename.
For example, you right-click on "clipx-1.0.3.7-setup.exe" and from the
context menu choose "FileNote...". Immediately NotePad opens with a blank
text file already named and saved as "clipx-1.0.3.7-setup.txt", so you can
add to it the notes you want.

The only advantage I can see in this program is that it creates and
opens a textfile with the same name as the file you want to comment.

But there are much better solutions, which follow old standards, like
creating a files.bbs or a descript.ion file with file comments, which
some programs show as tool tips when you hover over the file.

To be more specific I think about the nagware file manager Total
Commander which has this feature built into it. In it you can use
crtl-z to add or change a comment to the file you select, and this
comment is moved and copied with the file.

You can choose in the settings if you want to use the files.bbs or the
descrip.ion standard file for storing these comments in every folder.
The comment is shown as a tool tip when you hover the cursor over the
file.

There are other programs which use the same standard system, I just
don't remember which progs right now.
MS Explorer does not follow this standard though, as far as I know.

Many file archives on internet follow these old standards and use
either a files.bbs file or a descript.ion file in every folder to store
file
descriptions, so this standard works for looking through many file
collections on CD, if you use a file manager which supports this
standard for adding file comments.

For a long time I have used an early adware version of Flashget (v 0.87,
from the year 2000), formerly known as JetCar. It saves a separate text
file called [filename].[extension].log with all the info: URL, referrer,
time and date of download, and any comments you want to add during the
download (such as notes on what the file is, how to install//use it, etc).
I have found no other downloader that does the same thing.

This version of Flashget displays an ad banner at the top of the screen.
Deleting the related *.gif file from the program's folder stops the ad from
displaying. I think that subsequent versions fixed that loophole, and then
it became shareware from v1.2, which is why I haven't bothered to upgrade
it. The old version does virtually everything I need it to.

I don't know if version 0.87 is still available from anywhere. (I couldn't
find it, for example, at
http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/index.html.) If you can't find it,
e-mail me and I'll send the ZIP file of v0.87 to you. It's 1.13MB in size.

It makes it very easy to create a companion decription file with the
same name as your target file, but with a .txt extension.

Example:
Target file = FileNote110-Setup.exe
Description file = FileNote110-Setup.txt

PS: The FileNote Shell Extension uses Windows Notepad.

Mike,

just curious, you sure that this version is just adware? From all I could find
there was speculation that it was spyware as well. By the way I found a good
download link at on a foreign site and will only post it if someone wants a
copy, since it an OT subject.

Correction ..... FileNote shell extension uses whichever text editor you

Hi miskairal. I don't know if this will work in FF but it does work
extremely well in IE. So maybe if it is of no use to you, then others here
will find it useful.
With this tool you simply highlight whatever you want on a webpage,
rightclick and select "Archive selected text".
It is saved as follows ....

-----------------------------Example-------------------------
At 30/01/2005 10:31:00 PM the text below was copied from the web document
Change the Start Button Text (All Windows) at Registry Guide for Windows
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/791/

Captured Text Selection:
...... selected text follows here........
-----------------------End Example---------------------------

It gives 4 options for filename, incl a custom filename, but you cannot
select a destination folder. My default save folder is my documents\IE
archived text.

I knew of this one and have tried finding a firefox (and opera back when
I was using that) version with no luck. Thanks though.

Ciao,

This sounds reasonable, at least it will cut out a few steps - right
click, chooses New text file, name text file, open text file, copy and
paste URL will become right click .exe file and choose filenote, copy
and past URL. Off to get it now - thankyou!

Hi, Zo

I've had no such problems with FlashGet, as far as I know. I run all the
standard anti-spyware apps, and it's never been reported.

In Windows XP Pro, just right click, go to Properties, summary. Then add
the URL under author and any notes that you want about the program under the
comments section.
