Saving template file as doc word mac

Guest

I am having a problem using office 2004 for mac. If i have a template and
make a change to it and try and save it as a word document as opposed to a
template file i get the following error

"you cannot save a template file to a non-template format."

I can save it as a template again but kind of defeats the purpose of having
templates

Any help on this would be great

If you create a document based on the template, you shouldn't see an error
message. You can then modify the document as desired.

1. If you are opening the template to modify it, then you don't need Save
As, just Save.

2. If you are modifying a template to create a new template, then use Save
As.

3. If you want to create a document based on the template, then don't open
the template; use New instead (this is the default operation for .dot
files).

Thanks for that info Suzanne. It is number 3 that I want to do. I'm not too
sure though what you mean by not opening the template.

If I want to use the template to create a document how can I do it without
opening it?

thanks

A MacWord/WinWord difference--on the Mac, you cannot double-click a
template to create a document from it. The template must be in one of
Word's assigned template locations, and you must use File | Project
Gallery to create a new document from it.

For now, move the template into Applications/Microsoft Office
2004/Templates/My Templates, and use File | Project Gallery to access it.

You don't have to keep it there--read Word Help "About Template
locations". Also, if you use this template frequently, you can record a
macro to access it easily rather than go through the Project Gallery
every time.

PS. Yes, this is annoying. Please use Help | Send Feedback in MacWord to
complain about it, in hopes it might be changed someday.

PPS. Good thing you put Mac in your subject. There are Mac-specific
groups where tricks like these are known issues, and it would be good to
post there with future questions--See here for Google/Entourage gateway
to newsgroups for MacWord, MacExcel, and other MS programs for the Mac:

Assuming you've saved you template in the correct (default) location...

When you want to create a new doc based on the template go to File>Project
Gallery, select My Templates & double+click the one you want the doc based
on. The new file will be created as a doc. As Suzanne says, the only thing
you can do if you actually *open* the template itself is save changes to it
or save as another template. IOW, Do Not use File>Open or navigate to the
template in Finder & double+click the file.

This is a bone of contention in Mac Word because your templates **MUST** be
stored in the My Templates folder within the ~username/Applications/MS
Office 2004/Templates folder in order to be used as templates to create new
files. If you store them *anywhere else* you can't generate new files from
them - you can only _open_ the template file - unless you navigate to it
using the Project Gallery.

.... Sorry, that last phrase in my earlier post should read as "even if"
rather than "unless".
