for some reason I am now only given the option to save a picture from the net
as a bitmap instead of jpeg format. Why the sudden change and how can I
change it to save as a jpeg? Thank you

The usual reason is that your temporary internet folder is full. So, do
some cleanup.

Just before Kevin wrote his message, I posted a message 'saving images from
the internet' with the same problem, and now I want to say thank you to Jim
for his answer - because it solved at least my problem.

Kevin,

This problem occurs if the Temporary Internet Files are full.

1. Start Internet Explorer
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the General tab.
4. Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
5. When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.

I saw lot of answers posted about this and cache was not my problem and it
did not fix it.
This problem dogged me for awhile. I found a work around easily enough.
The problem is created when you install JAVA programs to win xp. When you
click any internet image it comes up to save as an untitled bitmap.
Do this instead, right click and choose> email picture, choose keep
original size>when the letter comes up>drag the attachment to your desktop
or go ahead and mail it to yourself and then use save attachment.
