Each time I start or reboot Windows XP it starts with the same folder open on
the desktop.

The system is not saving the desktop as it was on shut down.

I have forgotten how to tell it to do so!

Can anyone out there tell me how to do this as I am tired of looking at the
same folder window each time I start up.

Many thanks.

We'll be able to give you the answer if you tell us what folder opens on
the desktop.

Hi Malke,

It's C:\Program Files\Norton which is where I installed SystemWorks 2005
last week.

Thanks again,

Denis

Hi Denis,

You are looking for a listing that uses a long file name/path with spaces in
it, that is not enclosed in quotes. If found that is the culprit. Go to
Start/Run/msconfig/Startup.

If this is the case go to Start/Run/Regedit:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look here for the program/folder in question. If listed, double click the
entry and put the full path name in quotes. And Verify that all the values
in these keys do not contain any incorrect, incomplete, or null entries
(such as "").

Added info:

Separate Process for the Desktop and Explorer (Line 62)

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

That's not the usual "folder open on Desktop" problem. I honestly don't
know why the Norton folder would be appearing on your Desktop at
startup. You've looked in the Startup folder from your Start menu?
Anything weird in msconfig?

I'm afraid I'll have to leave it for someone else to answer, or you
could check with Symantec.

Hi Kelly,

The space in the folder name was the problem.

Many thanks for the solution.
