For some reason when I try and open or save files from a mac it seems to
take a really long time but if I try and open a file from a pc it opens up
just fine. Any clue what this could be?

Hi Ethan!

The first thing I would check is your network hub or switch. Are both the PC
and Mac plugged into the same one? Make sure they are using the same switch
while comparing speeds.

Then verify the speed and duplex of the Mac. Is it running at 10 or 100,
full or half duplex? Depending on your Mac's OS version, you'll check this
in either the Apple System Profiler or Network System Preference.

Also, what model of Mac are you using and what Mac OS version?

Hey Bill!

I am using Mac os 10.2.7, 10.2.4, & 9.2. All of these are saving to
Server 2003. Two of the Mac's are on the same exact 16 port switch as the
pc's and the other two Mac's are on a smaller 4 port switch that is
connected to the same 16 port switch as all the other computers. This
problem only started happening once I launched the new server with 2003, my
old server had no problems what so ever saving and loading. This problem is
really aggravating my life ;) (hehe). thanks for all your help!

Hi Ethan!

Then my guess now is going to be Appletalk vs. TCP/IP.

When your Macs are connecting to the server, they should all be locating the
server via Appletalk and then switching to TCP/IP when establishing a
connection. If they're connecting via Appletalk, then you'll see very slow
performance.

The easiest way to test this is from your Mac OS 9.2 machine. In the
Chooser, you can force your connection to use one or the other protocol. To
force Appletalk, hold the Option key down while you select the server. To
force TCP/IP, click the Server IP AddressŠ button and enter a name or IP
address.

You can also select a mounted volume on your Mac OS 9 station and choose Get
Info from the File menu. In the Get Info window you'll be told if your
connection is Appletalk or TCP/IP.

Hope this helps! bill
