This sounds simple, but I can't seem to do it.

I have a link on a web page to a word document .doc

It then opens the document INSIDE the browser window, I
want to be able to save it elsewhere, but can't find the
option to do so. The save on the browser, trys to save the
frame it is in??

Martin, instead of just clicking the link, right click to display the context menu, then select the "Save Target As" menu option. This will open a Save As dialog box, and you can save the file to your local machine.
HTH!
