Whenever i save any pic now, from internet explorer, it
always saves as a bitmap file. Even if the pics r jpeg
format, how can this be changed, there is no option to
save as jpg. thanks

This is an old problem that is rather easily solved. Clear out your
temporary internet files folder and see if it doesn't fix the issue.

I had the same problem after installing Service Pack 2,
but don't know if it's related to SP2. The resolution of
the problem is discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article #810978, which you can access at:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810978

The suggestions offered by the previous posters should address this problem
and serve to resolve it. As a humble addition to the totality of mankind's
knowledge, I offer this tid-bit: You can use a viewer such as Irfanview
(freeware) to convert any previously saved .Bmp to Jpg images (or just about
any other format to any other format).

Thank you all. I have had the bitmap problem twice now so it is very useful
to have a solution. The irfanview program is also very useful.

You can use a viewer such as Irfanview<<

Or you can just go download Firefox.

I'm so tired of this problem. None of the solutions work for me, and I'm
tired of reading the same drivel ... I just stop in every month or so to see
if it's fixed yet.

Clear the Temporary Internet Files. In IE>Tools>Internet Options>
Delete Files button. And check the box to Delete Offline content.

My TIF folder contains 9 cookies at 9 kb total. I never save anything. I
never 'check for new versions' of pages. I empty everything on shut down,
and Zone Alarm Pro's cache cleaner empties the cache at startup everytime.
And anytime I suspect something, and go looking for spyware, or adware, I
make sure the cache is clean. I clean my registry regularly. I defrag
regularly. I update regularly. I have read each and every KB article that
has been posted in these forums.

However, I am wondering ...

I am not comfortable tinkering in the Registry very much, but wondered if
the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT entries for .jpeg and .bmp should have similar value
entries, as mine are different (see below), and may show two different
problems here. One image handler value is set for MSPaint, which I do not
even have loaded ... and a default value for PaintShopPro9 ... which is
incorrect. So both entries are incorrect. PSP9 was a 'beta' that I thought
was uninstalled, and no longer in use. My default graphics program is PSP7.

Here is sample of entries for .bmp and .jpg:

______________________________
______________________________

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

..bmp

(Default) PaintShopPro9.Image
Content Type image/bmp
Perceived Type image
__________

OpensWithList (value not set)
MSPaint.exe (value not set)

OpensWithProgids (Default) (value not set)
Paint.Picture (zero-length binary value)

PersistentHandler (Default) {key data ...}
{sorry don't understand these key entries}

ShellEx (Default) (value not set)
{substring data} (Default) {another key data set ...}

______________________________
______________________________

..jpeg

(Default) jpegfile
Content Type image/jpeg
PerceivedType image

__________

jpegfile (Default) (value not set)
ShellNew (Default) (value not set)

OpensWithProgids (Default) (value not set)
jpegfile (zero-length binary value)

PersistentHandler (Default) {key data ...}

What should the entries be? What classes do I need to check for IE6 to
handle image files?

Somebody wanna mull this over a bit for me? Because I am in, waaaay over my
head in the Registry.

Sorry for snipping so much - however -
I had this same issue last week and a posting from jopa66 helped me resolve it.
Thanks again jopa66 -
I put together these instructions that I followed for deleting / recreating my corrupt
Temporary Internet Files folder, which is what resolved the issue for me -
I include the whole text - just skip anything you have already tried
and just do the part about deleting / recreating your TIF folder -
Best wishes and please post back if this worked for you.
------------------------------------------------------

Issue: 'Save picture as...' option in Internet Explorer not working correctly -

In Internet Explorer when try to use 'Save picture as...' to save a *.jpg picture to My
Pictures folder -
The 'File name' box is "Untitled" and the only option in the 'Save as type' box is "Bitmap
(*.bmp)"

The correct result should be for the proper file name to be shown and the type should be
JPEG (*.jpg)

Two Microsoft Knowledge Base articles concerning this issue:

Article 1 -
Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260650

Article 1 may not resolve the issue

Article 2 -
Right-Clicking, Selecting 'Save Picture As' Does Not Save Image with Correct Extension
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/250747

Article 2 workaround may work but it is just a workaround. not a resolution

If Article 1 does not resolve the issue then the Temporary Internet Files folder usually
located at
C:\Documents and Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files may be
corrupt.

How to delete and then rebuild that damaged Temporary Internet Files folder -

1. START > RUN > cmd (Press Enter or click OK)

- Command Prompt window opens -

Type the following command and press Enter:

set

Make note of the following information from list that is displayed:

USERNAME=
USERPROFILE=

Type the following command and press Enter:

exit

- Command Prompt window closes -

2. Open Windows Explorer - Go to Tools | Folder Options | View tab | Advanced settings
window -

Make sure this is set to 'Show hidden files and folders'

If checked, uncheck:

'Hide extensions for known file types'

'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'

(click Yes that you really want to do this when you get the warning)

If XP Pro with 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)' unchecked -

Check 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)'

Click "Apply" and then "OK" at the bottom of Folder Options

Then go to the Properties | Sharing tab of USERPROFILE folder under C:\Documents and
Settings and uncheck

"Make this folder private"

Cick Apply and OK

Close Windows Explorer

2. Boot to Safe Mode and log in as the Built In Administrator account -

3. START > SEARCH > All Files and Folders -

- Search Results opens -

Go to View and make sure it is set to 'Details'

Go to Tools | Folder Options | View tab | Advanced settings window -

Make sure this is set to 'Show hidden files and folders'

If checked, uncheck:

'Hide extensions for known file types'

'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'

(click Yes that you really want to do this when you get the warning)

If XP Pro with 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)' unchecked -

Check 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)'

Click "Apply" and then "OK" at the bottom of Folder Options

In the 'All or part of the filename' window type:

Temporary Internet Files

Make sure that the 'Look in' window is set to Local Disk (C:)
(Assuming Windows XP is installed in the C:)

Under 'More advanced options'

Make sure that the first 3 boxes are checked and that the bottom 2 boxes are
unchecked -

Click on 'Search'

When the search is complete, find the Temporary Internet Files for USERPROFILE and
delete it

If any warnings, confirm that you want to delete it -

If any errors that indicate some problem with deleting the folder, click OK to the
error -

Close Search Results and then open it again and search on Temporary Internet Files
again -

Confirm that the T.I.F. folder for USERPROFILE is gone -

Close Search Results

4. Restart computer to Normal Mode and log in as USERNAME

5. Open Internet Explorer and for testing purposes, go to http://www.jpeg.org/

Right click on one of the pictures and click on 'Save picture as...'

Verify that proper file name is shown and the type is JPEG (*.jpg)

No need to actually save the picture if not wanted -

6. Open Windows Explorer

Then go to the Properties | Sharing tab of USERPROFILE folder under C:\Documents and
Settings and check

"Make this folder private"

Cick Apply and OK

Set Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View tab | Advanced settings window -

back to any desired settings (May want to do so for the Built in Administrator account
also)

Click Apply and OK at the bottom
