Saved file is missing!

A friend i know contacted me saying the file he worked on for 2 hours and
then saved is missing. He started out by clicking open (not save) after
downloading an xlsm file from an email in Gmail, using Internet Explorer. He
then did his work and then clicked the floppy disk (save) button and the
exited. He claims that he was not prompted with a save as window. So i had
him search the entire hard drive for .xlsm files that contained the word
"first", which the original document had. Nothing was found. Nor did the file
appear in the recent documents section of the file menu nor the recent
directory of the documents and settings directory. I had him open each ms
office attachment file in the temporary internet files directory while logged
on to Gmail, it did not yield the file. I repeated what he did with the
original file and had no problem, so i had him run chkdsk with /F, which
didnt help. So please help us!

When I do this on my computer for files out of WebMail, they appear to be
saved in the following location:

C: -> Windows -> Temp -> Temporary Internet Files -> Content IE 5.0 ->
another folder in this (which appears to have a random name)

Hi,

Excel saves attachments back to a temporary folder related to your email
program, to eliminate any problems you should choose Save As not Save and you
should save it to one of your regular folders, such as MyDocuments
