When I save a document, e.g., a Word document or an Adobe pdf, it does not
appear visually in the folder to which it has been saved. To retrieve the
document, I have to initiate a search for it.

Double check that you are saving the files where you think that you are
saving them.

This is a common problem that even vastly experienced Windows users can
make. ;-)

Also, in Word...
Tools | Options | File Locations tab |
Look at the Default Save locations.

Lists the default storage location and search path for documents, templates,
and other items you create or use in Word. Click the item you want to
change, and then click Modify to set a new default location.

Highlight each item one at a time and click the Modify button, the default
location will be listed.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

1. To the best that I can determine, I'm saving the documents to the correct folder. 2. The "fix" suggested above did not work. I made the recommended default changes, created a new document, saved it, and encountered the same problem. If this is helpful, when I search for the documents, they show that they're located in: "C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\CPR" CPR is the folder to which I'm trying to save the documents, but they don't appear in that folder when I open the folder. Can someone suggest another solution?

Search for those files that you cannot see in
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\CPR

Right click those files, select Properties, on the General tab make sure
that Hidden is UNCHecked.

Hidden...
[[Specifies whether the file or folder is hidden, which means that you
cannot see or use it unless you know its name.

If multiple files are selected, a check mark means that all the files are
hidden. A filled box means that some files are hidden and some are not.]]

Unfortunately, this fix didn't work either. None of the files in question
were checked "hidden."
Perhaps this fact is relevant: Although the documents don't appear in the
folder when I open the folder either from the desktop or the quick launch,
while I was navigating around today, I was able to open the folder another
way and the documents were visible. The problem is that I can't remember how
I opened the folder! Regardless, I figure that I should be able to open the
folder in the normal fashion and find all of the documents that I saved to
it. Any more suggestions?

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\CPR

What opens?

Is your user name User?

Nothing opened. The computer responded that it couldn't find the file.
Also, I don't know if my "User name" is "user." Does it matter?

CPR is a folder, you told me that earlier.

According to your second post in this thread you stated that...

CPR is the folder to which I'm trying to save the documents

And this is the path that you gave..

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\CPR

If the above was a valid path, typing or pasting it into the Run command
would open it.

Paste this in the Run command..
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop

What opens?

Paste this in the Run command..
C:\Documents and Settings\User

What opens?

Paste this in the Run command..
C:\Documents and Settings

What opens?
Also, I don't know if my "User name" is "user." Does it matter?

Yes, if C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\CPR is to be a valid path
User has to exist.

If C:\Documents and Settings\User is not a valid path, like on my machine,
it opens the Open With applet.

Paste this in the Run command..
%userprofile%\Desktop\CPR

What opens?

Paste this in the Run command..
%userprofile%\Desktop

What opens?
