Save as isn't working

I have a client who has Office XP Standard. In the past, he has been able to
open Excel and do a Save As on the spreadsheet before entering any
information. Now, he is having problems whenever he tries to save a new
Excel spreadsheet or Word document. He can open an existing Excel
spreadsheet or Word document, edit it and save. But if he tries to use "save
as" on a new document or spreadsheet, the program stops responding. He can
get as far as naming the document/spreadsheet, but when he tries to save it,
the program locks up.

I have not looked at the system yet, so I don't know if there are
spyware/virus problems. The problem just started recently. Any suggestions
would be appreciated.
