XL2000 - Password to Modify Problem

L

LPS

Using XL2000, I have a client who uses a spreadsheet which has a password to
modify on it (assigned under File | Save As | Tools |General Options). If
another user opens the file as "read only", when he tries to open the file,
he gets the prompt for the password, which is what he wants. If, however,
another user tries to open the file, gets the prompt for the password, and
leaves the prompt on the screen, and leaves it like that indefinitely, when
my client tries to open the file, he can only open it in read-only; he does
not get the password prompt. Is there a way around this?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Hi LPS.
I think that what you have is a use conflict, which means that for the
sencond user, the file has already been opened by the first user. Windows
understand that you might just want to read the file and not modify it, so it
ask you if you want to open it as a Read-Only file. So in this case, you can
not have two users at the same time.

Now, there is a possible solution to this. This is sharing file option.
This option has its benefits and its problems. Yes, you can share the file so
everybody can open the file and make changes. This has two downsizes. First,
macros are not available in this option; Excel simply can handle it, so
Microsoft blocks this right from the start. Secondly, data integrity. While a
user is saving data in a row in an specific sheet, another user working at
the same time, migh be working in the very same rows. The first to save is
ok, no questions ask. The second though, will be ask if he wants to replace
the contentents already allocaded or saved in those rows. I think, if you
choose no, then you will not be able to save the data. Promises, but they
don't work. This one you might want to try. Perhaps it has been changed and
works now.

Take care

Argy!

Hi Agry,

Hope wouldn't mind me interrupting.

Is there a way several users could share (on a network/shared folder) the
same Excel file, where every users is allotted a specific area in the
worksheet where they can enter data and not in others'. The file should be
controlled by the creator.

Thanks in advance

Preman
