Save Applications of Programs

Amber

I'm trying to back up my pc programs to CD's.
I have a lot of free & mixed programs that I have saved over the past.
To test it, I have deleted a few programs and then tried to reinstall from
the CD.
I can't get the programs to install, even though I have "applications" with
the group of info for that programs.
Can anyone help me with helping save/reinstall programs ??

Also,, while I'm still here, another problem I'm having is that I can't get
programs to create a shortcut icon on the desktop.
I've searched everywhere for them, even under "Desktop" and can't locate
icons.

Thanks for any assistance

Windows was not designed with the intention of allowing programs to be
moved,
or saved to CD, after they have been installed. Whenever you install a
program, the install, or setup utility places it's files all over your
hard
drive. Some of the folders typically used to hold these files are \Program
Files, \Windows\System, \Windows\System32, \Windows, \Nameofprogram and
others. For an application to work properly, all of it's files must be
installed in the correct folders. In addition, installation utilities
typically enter numerous changes into the Windows Registry that 'tell
Windows' how to act when that particular program is started. Bottom line,
if
you don't have the original installation CD for a program, you're SOL.
Sorry.

She needs a backup plan like using Acronis True Image or Casper.
Perhaps she can use System Restore to roll back to a time preceding all
this, but at this point, that may be a long shot.

You can't back up the folders of installed programs and then expect to
restore and run them.. not how it works..

You will need the original installation files..

Re the second problem, it can happen that the right click function to send a
shortcut to the desktop doesn't work..

What you can do is use the option to create a shortcut within the program
folder and then drag the new shortcut to the desktop, OR CTRL + drag the
original icon to the desktop..

This happens even when I am installing a program from CD. I have to search
all over to find it.
Any thoughts on this ??
Thanks
