SATA - PATA HDD BACKUP

Is it possible to backup a SATA HDD to a PATA HDD?

Also, is it possible to restore a backup from a PATA HDD to a SATA
HDD. This question assumes the use of Ghost as the backup software.

Yes, you can readily backup an SATA drive to a PATA drive.

Yes. You can backup a SATA contents to a PATA harddisk.
And you can backup PATA contents onto a SATA drive.

BUT: you generally cannot just restore a SATA system image unto a
PATA drive and expect the OS to boot. Nor vice versa!

Mostly, an OS needs different configurations and drivers for SATA
and PATA. Even if they seem to boot OK, you might run into
troubles later on, as such a 'hidden' switch between SATA and
PATA is generally not foreseen by the system's designers.

The current versions can.

There once was an issue with SATA, but that was in the 2003
version.
(You cannot use SATA if you run the 2003 version 'out of the
box'. But then: it is never advisable to run software just 'out
of the box' nowadays. Always check for available updates and
fixes first.)

Thank you for solid information on Ghost. I have the 2003 version and
a search of the Symantec site did not reveal any patches or upgrades.
Is there a "freeware" application that will perform global backups
that you would recommend?
